NAD+ carries hydrogen throughout the cell's energy production, and it is also used up every time enzymes called sirtuins do their work, and those enzymes help maintain the chemical marks that switch genes on and off. As NAD+ falls with age, energy production and the upkeep of those gene switches may both get harder. NMN and NR are its precursors; in people, what has been seen so far is mainly changes in blood markers.

NMN, NR, niacin and nicotinamide all belong to the vitamin B3 family and all feed NAD⁺ synthesis in the cell. NMN and NR are sold as new anti-aging products; niacin and nicotinamide are cheap old vitamins. In human trials NMN and NR did raise NAD⁺ in the blood (Martens 2018, Yoshino 2021), but whether that brings any health benefit has not been shown.
NMN and NR top up the supply of the coenzyme NAD+; urolithin A takes a different route, dismantling damaged mitochondria through mitophagy. The two anti-aging routes are not the same thing; urolithin A's first human trial had safety as its primary endpoint and found molecular signals related to mitochondria.
Both sit on the brain-boosting, anti-aging shelf, but their evidence is not on the same level: the cholines (such as citicoline) have a signal from small trials in vascular cognitive impairment after stroke, while NAD+ precursors in people have not gone beyond changes in blood markers.
