←Sleep Architecture & Sleep Debt
Sleep is part of how a memory forms: the waking brain is better suited to encoding new memories, the sleeping brain to consolidating them. In slow-wave sleep, recently encoded memories are reactivated and gradually moved from depending on the hippocampus to storage in the cortex; the REM sleep that follows may help stabilize them. This is an explanatory framework, and not every link in it has been measured directly in people.
