You actually have two plumbing networks. One is the blood vessels, with the heart as the pump that sends blood everywhere. The other is the lymphatic system. It has no central pump like the heart; it quietly collects fluid and moves immune cells through the gaps between your tissues.

It has just two real jobs: returning extra fluid from the tissues to the blood, and serving as the immune system's highway and checkpoints. How fluid climbs through vessels with no central pump, how immune cells meet inside lymph nodes, and why the fat you eat takes this route too are all those two jobs in detail.

For you, that means three things. It needs you to move to help push it along. It is not a detox organ, and no massage can squeeze toxins out of it. And swelling comes in many kinds: if one leg suddenly swells, hurts, and turns warm and red, it may be deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in a deep leg vein), so see a doctor right away instead of getting a massage.
