The monacolin K in red yeast rice is lovastatin, the same molecule. It blocks the key enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol (HMG-CoA reductase), so liver cells put more LDL receptors on their surface and pull LDL cholesterol out of the blood, by about as much as a low-dose statin. Red yeast rice is therefore not a natural alternative to a statin; it is a statin without a dose on the label.
