Lutein is fat-soluble: it has to dissolve into the fat droplets in the gut and cross the gut wall along with the fat before it reaches the blood. In Unlu 2005, adding avocado to the same salad clearly raised absorption of lutein, beta-carotene and lycopene. So take a lutein supplement with a meal that contains fat, and give leafy greens a little oil.

Lutein and zeaxanthin concentrate in the macula, the center of the retina, and the people with trial evidence for an eye-health formula are those who already have intermediate macular degeneration. Myopia means the eyeball has grown too long, and no supplement can shorten it, so protecting the macula and preventing myopia are separate problems.

Both are carotenoids, but the evidence is not in the same league. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the main pigments of the macula; in intermediate age-related macular degeneration, AREDS2 found they can safely replace the formula's beta-carotene, though adding them did not slow progression further. Astaxanthin has had no such trial, and eye-health blends of several carotenoids have never been compared.
Screens affect your eyes and your sleep in two separate ways, and blue-light marketing merges them into one: tired eyes from screens come mainly from dryness because you blink less, plus the focusing muscles staying tense, while evening screen light shifts the timing of melatonin release. The first is helped by looking into the distance every so often, the second by managing when you get light.
