Outdoor daylight does two jobs at once. In a randomized trial, schoolchildren given an extra 40 minutes outdoors a day developed less new myopia over three years. The same light also sets the body clock through a class of light-sensing cells in the retina (ipRGCs). Sending a child outside gets both benefits.

Vitamin A is the raw material for rhodopsin, the light-sensing protein in the retina's rod cells, so the first thing to fail when it runs short is vision in dim light, known as night blindness. It governs seeing in the dark, not how nearsighted you are; marketing often blurs the two.

Lutein and zeaxanthin concentrate in the macula, the center of the retina, and the people with trial evidence for an eye-health formula are those who already have intermediate macular degeneration. Myopia means the eyeball has grown too long, and no supplement can shorten it, so protecting the macula and preventing myopia are separate problems.
