Creatine tops up the muscle's phosphocreatine store so that short bursts of high-intensity effort last longer; beta-alanine raises muscle carnosine, which helps buffer the acid produced during hard exercise. The two work in different ways, and the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) considers them fine to combine, but evidence that the combination clearly beats either alone is limited.

Citrulline is converted in the body into arginine, which raises nitric oxide and improves blood flow: in Bailey 2015, a small crossover trial of 10 healthy men, it extended tolerance of high-intensity exercise. Beta-alanine, by contrast, buffers acid in muscle through carnosine. The two are often put in the same pre-workout product, but their combined effect has not been tested directly in a trial.
