The third thread of insomnia is the stress axis (HPA): cortisol that stays high makes it hard to fall asleep and keeps sleep light. Ashwagandha is sold to calm exactly this axis, but it is only an aid. A problem in any of the three threads, sleep pressure, the body clock or the stress axis, can cause insomnia, so first work out which one it is.

"Adaptogen" is a category label, not a mechanism: the term comes from a Soviet-era research tradition and refers to herbs said to help the body withstand stress. Ashwagandha has the most evidence in the group, but mechanisms and strength of evidence differ widely between members, so one cannot vouch for another.
These two herbs sit on the same "boost testosterone" shelf and get compared, but their mechanisms are completely different: the evidence for fenugreek is mostly about libido, with weak testosterone data, while ashwagandha's small rise comes indirectly from lower cortisol and better sleep, and there are case reports of liver injury. Seen side by side, they are clearly not substitutes for each other.
Chronic stress keeps cortisol high in some people, and in animal studies that damages the hippocampus, a brain region that handles memory and helps put the brakes on emotion. Ashwagandha is sold to calm exactly this stress axis, and small trials saw lower stress scores and cortisol, but it is only an adjunct and cannot replace proper treatment for depression or anxiety.
