Alkaline Water & Diet

Can alkaline water neutralize body acid

EVIDENCEREVIEW 1

READ THE ORIGINAL

The acidity of your blood is held in a very narrow range by your lungs and kidneys, and nothing you drink or eat can move it; alkaline water is neutralized by stomach acid first. Why it cannot be moved is covered in the later chapter on why food cannot change blood pH. So the promise of alkaline water and alkaline diets fails at its premise.

The claim comes in two versions that usually travel together. One is alkaline water: raise the water's pH and it will supposedly neutralize acid in the body. The other is the alkaline diet: sort foods into "acid-forming" and "alkaline-forming," and eat more of the alkaline-forming kind.

Both share one premise: that modern bodies are "too acidic," that this "acidic constitution" is the root of disease, fatigue and aging, and that what you eat and drink can shift the body "back to alkaline." This story takes that premise apart: what actually sets the body's acid-base balance, whether the water you drink can change it, and which part of the theory is true.
