Is honey healthier than sugar?

Once inside the body, honey and white sugar break down into almost the same molecules: glucose and fructose. White sugar (sucrose) is one glucose joined to one fructose, and the small intestine cuts it apart. Honey is already a mix of the two, about 38% fructose and 31% glucose, with most of the rest water. In the liver, fructose bypasses a gate that meters energy, so switching to honey does not reduce the sugar that takes that road.

Honey carries only traces of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, too little to matter nutritionally. Honey is more natural, so it is healthier is mostly a feeling. What is worth managing is how much sugar gets added to food and drink in total, which is what free sugars means.

One red line has nothing to do with cutting sugar: infants under 1 year old must not have honey in any form, because it can cause infant botulism, which can be life-threatening. If a baby who has had honey feeds weakly or turns floppy, seek medical care immediately.

A different name, still glucose and fructose

This compares sugar sources and molecular relationships, rather than molecular structure, proportions, equal sweetness or equal-weight portions.

White sugar is sucrose: Sucrose joins one glucose to one fructose. It is split in the small intestine into the two molecules.
Honey's sugar mixture: Honey already contains glucose and fructose. Its natural origin does not change its classification as free sugars.
