The orange is one of the most common members of the citrus family, related to lemon, pomelo, mandarin, and lime. What most people call an 'orange' is the sweet orange; navel and blood oranges belong here.
It has two parts: the segmented flesh inside, and the peel with its white pith outside. The flesh gives water, sugar, and vitamin C, while the pith and membranes hold most of the fiber and flavonoids.

Weighing the 'vitamin C king' title
Oranges and vitamin C are tied together so tightly that it became a title. But 'which food has the most vitamin C' is a question with a checkable answer — look it up in one database.Per 100 g raw, ascorbic acid:

Red bell pepper isn't a fruit and never sits on the 'get your vitamin C' shelf, yet by weight it carries more than twice what an orange does.
This page is not saying 'don't eat oranges' — an orange is still a fine vitamin C source, and it brings folate, potassium, fibre and hesperidin that a bell pepper doesn't.
It is saying something else: a 'king of X' claim can almost always be overturned by one table. Next time a food is crowned for some nutrient, you know what to do — look up the per-100 g figure, then check whether something else quietly beats it. The answer is usually right there; nobody looks.

What the juicer actually removes
'Fresh-squeezed beats a soft drink' sounds self-evident. Put a whole orange and raw orange juice in the same table and the difference gets specific.Per 100 g:

Calories nearly identical, vitamin C nearly identical, and fibre down about 92%.
So juicing barely touches the sugar and barely touches the vitamin C; what it mainly removes is fibre. And fibre is exactly what decides how fast that sugar reaches your blood — it forms a viscous layer in the gut that spreads absorption over a longer window. The sugar isn't reduced; its arrival rate is.
That is why, over long follow-up, whole fruit and fruit juice point in opposite directions (Muraki 2013): the same sugar, one of them slowed by fibre and one not.
Practically: drink it if you want it, but count it as 'a sweet drink that carries vitamin C', not as 'a serving of fruit'. The fruit part is in the pulp you threw away.

'Vitamin C prevents colds' may be the most widespread nutrition claim of all, and many people down effervescent tablets the moment a cold starts. Let's compare it against the evidence.
Much of the claim traces to Linus Pauling's promotion in the 1970s, but the decades of research since have not backed him. A Cochrane systematic review of many randomized trials concludes that for the general population, regular vitamin C supplementation does not prevent colds — it does not lower your chance of catching one.
Does it do nothing? Not quite. The same evidence shows regular supplementation slightly shortens how long a cold lasts, but the effect is small, and it applies to taking it regularly, not to megadosing once a cold has begun. There is one exception: in people under heavy physical stress — marathon runners, those working in extreme cold — vitamin C did show a preventive effect.
So the accurate statement is not 'vitamin C prevents colds' but 'for most people it won't prevent a cold, at most it trims the duration a little'. Rather than stockpiling tablets, eat whole oranges and vegetables regularly and treat vitamin C as part of your everyday diet.
