1 · B12's second enzyme · MUT
B12 is also the cofactor of a second enzyme, MUT, which in mitochondria turns methylmalonyl-CoA into succinyl-CoA so special fuels such as odd-chain fatty acids can enter the cycle.Besides MTR (the enzyme behind methylation), B12 is the cofactor of a second enzyme —Methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MUT) in mitochondria:
methylmalonyl-CoA → succinyl-CoA *(with B12 as cofactor)*
Succinyl-CoA enters the cycle to produce energy.
Substrates come from:
· Odd-chain fatty acids (such as C15 and C17, present in small amounts in animal fat)
· Certain amino acids (Met, Val, Ile, Thr)
· Cholesterol side chains.
MUT routes these 'special fuels' into the TCA cycle, letting the body produce energy from various unusual substrates.
