1 · UVB shallow · UVA deep
UVB is absorbed almost entirely in the epidermis, damaging DNA and causing sunburn; UVA reaches the dermis and, without reddening the skin, steadily breaks down collagen and elastin.Sun exposure isn't one thing — UVB and UVA are two types of UV with completely different penetration depths, doing different things in the skin:UVB (290-320 nm) · short wave · shallow
· Almost entirely absorbed by the epidermis stratum corneum + basal layer
· 3 main jobs:
· Directly hits DNA → pyrimidine dimers (CPD) → mutations → main cause of skin cancer (BCC / SCC / melanoma)
· Stimulates melanogenesis → tanning + redness + sunburn
· 7-DHC → vitamin D₃ synthesis
· UV Index primarily reflects UVB intensity
· Glass / sunscreen SPF block effectively
UVA (320-400 nm) · long wave · deep
· Passes through the epidermis, reaches the dermis — home of collagen / elastin / fibroblasts
· Intensity ~ 20× UVB, stable year-round + all day (UVB peaks at noon)
· Glass (regular window / car window) doesn't block UVA — indoors + in cars still ages photo-wise
· Almost never causes immediate sunburn, but cumulatively destroys collagen + elastin = long-term wrinkles + sagging + pigment spots + telangiectasia
· Tanning is partly via UVA immediately through the immediate pigment darkening (IPD) of pre-existing melanin
No redness = no damage is wrong — UVA doesn't redden you but is breaking down collagen almost without missing a day.
