1 · Balance · build vs resorb
Osteoblasts secrete both , which activates osteoclasts, and OPG, a decoy that intercepts it, and their ratio sets net osteoclast activity. In adult bone, osteoblasts (OB) and osteoclasts (OC) are in constant dialogue. OB simultaneously secrete two molecules that decide OC fate:· (RANK ligand) — the 'ignition' signal: binds RANK receptors on OC → activates OC → resorbs bone
· OPG (osteoprotegerin) — the 'fire-extinguisher' decoy receptor: intercepts RANKL so it cannot reach RANK
So net osteoclast activity = the RANKL / OPG ratio.
In young adults this ratio stays low → moderate resorption → balanced with formation → net bone mass stable.
