Rhodiola is one of the more studied adaptogens, and its use is narrow: it targets the fatigue and burnout that chronic stress drags out, not a quick mental boost. A systematic review judged that it may help, but the individual studies lack independent replication; the mechanism is still a hypothesis, thought to act on the stress-response axis (HPA). What it offers is not feeling sharper but being harder to wear out.
In one of the few randomized trials in burnout (Olsson 2009), 60 people with fatigue from long-term stress took a standardized extract for 4 weeks and improved more than placebo on a burnout scale and several attention measures, though both groups improved markedly on placebo and the trial was small and single-center. At most it is an add-on; it cannot replace changes to workload and recovery, which are what actually work.
