1 · L-theanine · the amino acid in tea
L-theanine is an amino acid found almost only in the tea plant, and a cup of tea holds far less than the 100-200 mg that supplements and trials use.L-theanine is an amino acid the body does not use to build protein, found almost only in the tea plant (Camellia sinensis), where it makes up about 1-2% of the dry leaf. It is not a green-tea exclusive: Keenan 2011, brewing a standard 200 mL cup, measured about 24 mg in black tea and about 8 mg in green tea — steeping time is the biggest variable, and both are far below the 100-200 mg that supplements and trials use.It resembles glutamate, and in animal studies it enters the brain through the blood-brain-barrier carrier for large amino acids. Taken by mouth, it reaches peak plasma level about 0.8 h later (Scheid 2012: a 100 mg capsule and a cup of green tea gave similar curves).
