1 · Selye's general adaptation
Any stressor triggers a three-phase response of alarm, resistance and exhaustion, and training should stay in the resistance phase so the body adapts and gets stronger in recovery.Hans Selye 1956 *The Stress of Life* proposed the general adaptation syndrome (GAS): any stressor (training / illness / starvation / psychological) triggers a three-phase response:· Alarm — immediate stimulus, resource mobilisation
· Resistance — the body adapts to the stressor, performance maintained under stress
· Exhaustion — chronic overload, system collapse
Training application: one session = one stressor. Training damages the body, but the body adapts + gets stronger during recovery. The key is keeping training volume in the resistance phase, not reaching exhaustion.
This is the physiological root of the word adaptation — not getting stronger but ↑ capacity to handle future similar stressors.
