1 · Eccentric → Z-disc microtearing
Eccentric contraction loads sarcomeres unevenly, and at peak load the Z-disc develops microscopic tears, a normal microdamage rather than an injury.Eccentric contraction (muscle bearing load while lengthening, e.g. lowering the barbell) places uneven load on individual sarcomeres — 25-40% more tension than the concentric phase. The Z-disc is the "anchor" at each end of the sarcomere; at peak eccentric load, the Z-disc + costamere (lateral sarcomere anchoring structure) develop microscopic tears.
Blood markers: 24 h after eccentric training, (creatine kinase) + myoglobin rise significantly in plasma — evidence that the muscle membrane was "punctured."
Important: this is "normal," not "injury." In healthy people, the response to this microdamage is repair + adaptation (becoming stronger), not "cumulative harm."
