1 · Gym lore: a decades-old wrong model
The decades-old idea that lactate build-up causes the burn and later soreness () fails three ways: the burn comes from H⁺, lactate consumes H⁺, and the timing is wrong. The wrong model passed around gyms / PE classes for decades:· High-intensity training → "lactate piles up" → muscle "burns"
· After training, lactate can't be cleared in time → 24-48 h soreness ()
· "Massage flushes lactate / sauna flushes lactate / alkaline water neutralises lactate"
Three errors in this model, each corrected by modern physiology:
1. The chemistry of the burn: what actually drops pH is H⁺ (hydrogen ion) from hydrolysis + Pi release, not lactate (Robergs 2004 *Am J Physiol*).
2. The role of lactate: the LDH reaction that produces lactate consumes one H⁺; lactate itself is an H⁺ buffer. When lactate leaves a muscle cell, it takes H⁺ with it (MCT4 co-transport).
3. The DOMS timeline: lactate is fully cleared within 60 min after training. DOMS peaks at 24-48 h. The timings don't line up — causality is impossible (Cheung 2003 *Sports Med*).
Why this error lasted so long: surface correlation (lactate rises during training + burn happens during training + soreness happens after). Brains default correlation → causation; slow textbook updates + marketing exploiting the word "lactate" to sell massage / sauna / alkaline water all reinforce it.
