1 · Selenium is encoded as the 21st amino acid
When a SECIS structure sits downstream, the cell reads the UGA stop codon as selenocysteine and translates selenium straight into the protein.Unlike other minerals (Zn, Cu, Mg) which simply slot into an enzyme pocket, selenium is actually written into the protein sequence, forming selenocysteine (Sec) — a special amino acid with much higher reactivity than cysteine (Cys). The mRNA UGA codon is normally a stop signal, but when a downstream secondary structure called SECIS is present, UGA is re-interpreted as Sec — selenium gets translated into the protein.
The human genome encodes about 25 selenoprotein genes, the most important being:
· GPx 1-4 and 6 — selenoprotein antioxidant workhorses; GPx5 / 7 / 8 use Cys and are not selenoproteins
· TrxR (thioredoxin reductases) 1-3 — maintain cellular redox homeostasis
· DIO (deiodinases) 1-3 — chop into (interlocks with the iodine story)
This is why selenium deficiency simultaneously degrades thyroid hormone activation + antioxidant capacity + reproductive function (the sperm tail needs GPx4) — one mineral, three systems collapse together.
