1 · Bone constantly remodels
Bone is not stone, it is living tissue — the adult skeleton remodels ~ 10% every year, getting a whole new skeleton in 10 years. Two cell types work simultaneously:· Osteoblasts — secrete new bone matrix (mainly type I collagen + osteocalcin), deposit calcium and phosphorus into hydroxyapatite crystals, building the bone up
· Osteoclasts — use acid (H⁺) + proteases (cathepsin K) to dissolve bone, releasing calcium, phosphorus, and collagen fragments back into the blood.
Net change = build - resorb. When young, build > resorb (bone mass increasing); peak at age 30; after 50, build < resorb (net bone loss).
