1 · Drinking exceeds sweat loss
In an endurance race, a runner drinks plain water cup after cup on a schedule and takes in more than sweat removes, while the sweat also carries some sodium away.· Water accumulates· Sodium is not replaced in step
· Plasma and the fluid between cells are diluted — this is where EAH starts
In the multivariate analysis of Almond 2005 (Boston Marathon), three things were independently associated with low sodium: weight gain during the race ( 4.2), finishing in more than 4 hours (odds ratio 7.4), and a that was too high or too low. Female sex, sports drink versus water, and use were not independently associated after adjustment.
Gaining weight instead of losing it is itself proof that more went in than came out.
