1 · Set point · the body defends a range
The hypothalamus integrates leptin (from fat), ghrelin (from stomach), insulin, , and other signals to regulate appetite and metabolism, trying to keep weight within a range.Eat less → leptin ↓ → ghrelin ↑ → BMR ↓ → NEAT ↓ → ravenous hunger → weight rebounds. Eat more → leptin ↑ → satiety ↑ → thermogenesis ↑ → weight drops. This is not willpower; it's physiological feedback. How tight that feedback really is remains contested. Three models compete: the set point (the body actively defends a target), the settling point (no target at all — just where energy in and out happen to balance), and the dual intervention point (a wall above and below, drifting with the environment in between). Population data have not cleanly decided between them.
All three agree on one thing: that range is not fixed. The environment can push it up.
