1 · One fat cell
A fat cell holds one huge droplet at its center, and when energy is in surplus the body either enlarges these cells or makes more of them.First, zoom in on a single fat cell (adipocyte). It is not just a bag of oil — the nucleus and cytoplasm are squeezed to the rim, and the center is one huge lipid droplet holding , the body's long-term energy store. It is also an endocrine organ: it is this cell that secretes leptin, reporting energy levels to the brain. So fat is not dead inventory; it talks, it signals.
When the energy you take in chronically exceeds what you burn, the surplus must be stored here, and the body has two routes:
· Make existing cells bigger — the droplet swells; this is hypertrophy.
· Make fat cells more numerous — precursor cells differentiate into new adipocytes; this is hyperplasia.
The difference between these two routes sets up a harsh fact about later weight loss.
