1 · Normal anatomy · lower esophageal sphincter
The lower esophageal sphincter stays tight and opens only briefly when you swallow, keeping stomach acid out of the esophagus.Between esophagus and stomach sits a ring of muscle — the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Normally it stays tight like a rubber band, opening only briefly during swallowing to let food pass. Stomach acid (pH 1.5–3.5) is kept in place; the esophageal mucosa (tolerates pH 6–7) never touches acid.LES tone is regulated by nerves, hormones, and food. Normal LES resting pressure is 10–30 mmHg.
